What is Laser Vascular Therapy?

Vascular lesions include a range of conditions. Whether it be leg veins, facial veins, angiomas or venous lakes or rosacea, laser and light-based devices have become a viable treatment option to safely and effectively remove and diminish unwanted vascular concerns.

Vascular concerns occur when one-way valves inside the vein become weak and damaged, causing blood in the vein to back up and pool in the small blood vessels—capillaries—located just underneath the skin. Laser-based treatments offer an effective, non-surgical tool to minimize the visible discoloration caused by this mild to moderate vascular damage. The precisely-calibrated laser targets the affected vein with light, which, when absorbed by the pigment in the blood as heat, coagulates the blood and allows the capillary to collapse. Over the course of several weeks, the destroyed vessel is painlessly reabsorbed by the body, minimizing the appearance of discoloration in the skin.

Laser treatment is minimally-invasive and comfortable due to a cooling tip to help keep the surface of the skin cool. Most patients can return to normal activities immediately. Multiple treatments may be required for optimal results. Laser vein therapy is not appropriate for large varicose veins.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Patients remark differently based on their personal experiences. Some feel slight discomfort. Others describe any discomfort they experienced as no more than a rubber band snapping against their skin or a light pinch.

  • Laser delivers pulses of precisely-colored light energy. The light penetrates below the surface of the skin and the heat causes the blood within the tiny vessels to coagulate. The walls of the vein collapse, blood flow is stopped and over the next two to eight weeks the vein is absorbed into the body and disappears. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin’s surface where it should be

  • Treatment time depends on the area of the body being treated. Procedure can range from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the depth of the veins and the area or areas to be treated. Typically, patients spend no longer than 30 minutes in total.

  • In most cases, patients find that one or two treatments are sufficient for treating spider veins. However, individual results will vary. The amount of treatments necessary depends on a number of factors including the color and size of the vessels being treated.

  • During the few days following a session, the laser-treated skin will be mildly red and the veins may darken. You may also experience some bruising and swelling of the treated area, which normally resolves within a week or so. Any blistering that occasionally occurs normally heals within a week with conservative treatments.

  • Often, the treated veins disappear immediately, but in some cases, it may take a number of weeks to do so as your body absorbs it over time.

  • This therapy does no treat varicose veins.

As with any medical treatment, expecting & nursing mothers are advised against treatment.

The heat from laser genesis can trigger melasma, so it is not suitable for these patients.

  • No saunas, hot tubs, sun exposure for 1 week post treatment. Cool compress can be applied to soothe redness and bruising.
